A Day At Walter Jones Historical Park
Walter Jones Historical Park holds an abundance of history to explore.
Though the park is open to the public til sunset all week long, spending a Saturday there will give you the full experience. On Saturdays, volunteer docents are on duty to provide historical knowledge, as well as access to the multiple buildings located onsite. By no means should you be discouraged if you don't go on a Saturday, the park is filled with beauty and tranquility to experience.
You should begin your day at the Mandarin Museum. Here you will get to explore the many artifacts that have been collected. The exhibits display the rich history of Mandarin during the Civil War.
Next door to the museum you will find the restored 1898 Schoolhouse used to educate African-American children after the war. Head pack toward the parking lot and enter the remainder of the park. Along the walking trail that leads to the beautiful boardwalk and views of the St. Johns River, you can also explore the Losco Winery, the 1876 Barn, the 1875 Webb/Jones Farmhouse and the Sawmill. When not on a historical adventure, take a walk or enjoy a picnic under the rustic picturesque scenery.
Then head over to the County Dock that was recently renovated and adjacent to the park!
