CITY PARK ITINERARY: James Weldon Johnson Park (formerly Hemming Park)
Jacksonville’s First Park Offers Family Fun & History in the Heart of Downtown
DAY 1:
Spend the day at James Weldon Johnson Park
MORNING: Take the Skyway over to James Weldon Johnson Park (formerly Hemming Park). Park your car at the Kings Avenue Station (Kings Ave. & Nira St on the Southbank) and enjoy the free ride over to Downtown. The Skyway runs from 6 a.m.- 9 p.m. Bring your camera along to snap photos of Jacksonville’s skyline when riding over the Acosta bridge. Get off the Skyway at the Hemming Plaza Station. If you want to drive to the park, please note that metered parking is limited to 2-hours. James Weldon Johnson Park has an extensive activities calendar with unique events every day so check out the Events Calendar in advance before scheduling your trip. Once at the park, explore the many art sculptures and unique history markers. James Weldon Johnson Park, is a 1.5-acre public square in the center of the city, it is Jacksonville’s first and oldest park and the site of many significant historic events. James Weldon Johnson Park is a kid friendly park with a dedicated Kids Zone for children to enjoy, there are also benches to sit and relax on.
AFTERNOON: When you are ready for lunch, try one of the food trucks at James Weldon Johnson Park, they have different ones each day. You can also explore one of the many restaurants within walking distance of the park including Desert Rider Sandwich, Happy Grilled Cheese, Chamblin’s, Sushi Burrito, Bellwether and Zodiac Bar & Grill. After grabbing a bite to eat, head back to the park and located right across the street is the Jacksonville Main Library, head to the 4th floor of the library and learn about the rich history of Jacksonville. The little ones can have fun in the interactive Children’s section. Next door to the Main Library is MOCA, be sure to spend some time in this museum and gift shop.
LATE AFTERNOON: End the day with grabbing a sweet treat at Sweet Pete’s. Take your sweet treat to go and enjoy it at the park. When you are ready to head home, head back up the escalator at the Hemming Park Station and ride the Skyway back to your car.
